Organic Deposits


The formation of calcium naphthenate deposits is recognized as a major flow assurance issue in many fields, and will continue to grow in importance as the volume of heavy/high TAN crudes produced increases. The mechanisms and parameters which determine whether these deposits will form under field conditions are still poorly understood, and much effort is being spent on understanding these better.
At Scaled Solutions Ltd, we have designed dynamic naphthenate flow rigs which have been used to investigate the formation and inhibition of calcium naphthenate deposits in the laboratory under conditions closely resembling those found in the field. These test rigs complement the somewhat limited conventional bottle tests, the results of which often do not represent the operators reality. Our dynamic flow rigs have been validated in field studies and are routinely used to assist in the determination of field treatment designs.
More recently we have expanded our capability in emulsion testing to allow tests to be conducted at 100°C and 100Barg using purpose built emulsion rigs.
In addition to the elevated pressure tests, we are well placed to carry out more standard oil / brine testing. We can carry out stand alone projects to meet the production issues in specific fields. We also offer the opportunity to develop naphthenate solutions in our R&D capacity in 1:1 or multi-sponsored JIPs.

  • Asphaltene deposition and chemical performancecan be examined in the laboratory in several ways. Several types of flow rig have been designed to simulate the various changes in production conditions that can promote asphaltene deposition. One type of rig can examine the mixing of asphaltenic crude oil with incompatible fluids.
    This rig is automated and can be used to examine the mixing ratios where asphaltene
    deposition is most likely to occur, at pressures up to 4000psi and temperatures up to 200oC.
    Following this the rig can be used to investigate the level of chemical required to prevent deposition under set conditions.
    A quick and simple method to examine deposition and chemical performance is asphaltene dispersant tests (ADT). They can also be used to determine the minimum inhibitor concentration and therefore the return lifetime of chemical squeeze treatments.
